“I’m as good as any Christian!”
A Christian, by himself, isn’t good. Jesus said that God alone is good. The only “goodness,” or righteousness, that the believer has comes from Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 3:9). The Bible tells us that, without Christ, man is corrupt and filthy; “there is none that does good, no, not one” (Psalm 14:3).

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Paraphrase: Jesus took the name of sin upon himself even though he was the holiest thing. He faced the biggest contradiction so we wouldn't have to.
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith Paraphrase: I don't have anything on Jesus as far as goodness. All I have is a book of instructions he gave me. By faith in Christ, I will know how to use it.
They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: There is none that doeth good, no, not one. Paraphrase: I know I'm not capable of doing good by myself. In fact, by myself I can be really bad. I need Christ.

I may not be the best person around but I've made an effort to change and learned to respect the lives of more people than ever before.

What more can I do than repent?

Repentance is more than merely changing our lives. Let's say that a bank robber robbed banks for 15 years. If he repents, he isn't going to rob any more banks. However, if he is face the judge, the law demands more than "I'm sorry for my actions. I promised not to rob any more banks." He will not take that into consideration. He demands that justice must be paid for all of that 15 years of robbing banks. He will be sentence to life in prison. But at the last moment, someone steps into the courtroom and says "Stop. I know that this man is guilty. But because he is guilty, I will exchange his punishment in order for him to go free. It is not my duty, but my overall love and compassion for him."
That is how repentance is. It cannot save us. We have sinned against a Holy and Just God. We can say "I'm sorry, I will never do that again." But repentance does not change the past. Justice demands for us to pay for our crimes. But someone, who you do not even know, paid our price on the cross. It is not what repentance is what saved us, but repent and trust in Christ. He will wipe away the record for your sins so that there is nothing will be held against you on the day of judgement (1 John 1:9).

I think this implies that we have negative rights(there are things that can't be taken away) because of the existence of God. Positive rights are entitlements, which don't really exist. However, if we live in a harsh world reality in which it's a jungle out there, no one really has any rights. In that case there's just God, plain and simple, and rights were a word we made up to describe God's legacy, since he has a conscience to do no harm.
