What is truth? That is the real problem in today's society. There are many people say that there is no absolute truth? Is that true? If it is, then that statement is false. Or what about: What is true for you is not what is true for me. Is that true? What if the truth of that statement is false for me? Then what is truth?
John 18:38, Pilate asked Jesus of what is truth? Little did he know that statement followed after him into the 21st century. Truth agrees with reality. If I say that the sun is cold, I would be wrong. It could still be an opinion, but it will still be wrong. Now if I say that the sun is colder than some stars, that statement is true. If I compare that object with others, then that statement can be true. But if I just said that the sun is cold by itself, then you would probably think I am crazy.
How about another truth? John 14:6 says "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." That phrase stands by itself of being true. Like I said, truth have to match up with reality. But let's look at the 3 truths in this verse.
"I am the way." That means that there is one way to the Father. It is not "a way" or "many ways." In this culture, many believe that there are many ways to Heaven. We have many religions and denominations, but what is the way? It is Jesus Christ, who is the way to Heaven, despite what other religions tell us.
"I am the truth." That means that whatever matches with Jesus is the truth. Like stated above, many people believes there is no absolute truth and all truths are relative to one another. But Jesus is the measuring stick to decide what truth is. A.W. Tozer said that we cannot call a line crooked without some kind of a straight measure to compare it to."
"I am the life." That means only He gives life to the new believers. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." He is the only one to make us into something wonderfully new. In this culture, many people do not believe that there is a life after death.
So that is one of the ways that we can know what truth is. By comparing our ideas and believes, which are crooked at best, and compare it to the straight edge of God's Word, then we know what is truth.
